Palm kernel oil is used in the production of foodstuffs, cosmetics, detergents and detergents or agro-sprays. This is obtained from rainforest regions which are first extensively destroyed by slash-and-burn clearance. This creates areas to plant huge monocultures of palm oil plantations (images of cleared rainforests). Under the guise of sustainability, people want to show the public that the production of products with palm kernel oil is not a crime and that it is even possible to acquire clean certificates for this.

There is also the "Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)", which was set up by WWF. However, there are more industry representatives (Unilever, etc.) and energy companies than environmental organisations at this table, so that the representation of interests is one-sided. There is a disparity between industry and environmental organisations of around 93% to 7%. Rescue the rainforest says that the RSPO does not exclude the clearing of rainforest, but only prohibits the clearing of primary forests and forests worthy of special protection with the seal of approval. Furthermore, they say:"The label deceives the public.(RSPO seal).

How can further deforestation of irrecoverable rainforest areas for the cultivation of palm oil plantations to extract palm kernel oil be sustainable? Due to the weighty word "sustainable", the large-scale clearing of rainforests and the destruction of peat forests, which both store large amounts of CO2, cannot be called "good". The deforestation of these vital forests not only releases a great deal of CO2 and accelerates climate change, but also severely damages biodiversity. Incidentally, manufacturers are not obliged to label palm oil on their products. They use the terms "vegetable fat","vegetable oil" etc. instead. It is so popular because its properties make it the cheapest oil on the world market... but also the most unhealthy due to many saturated fatty acids.

What can you do about it?

  • Find out if there is palm oil (vegetable fat) in your products (in every second product there is palm oil in it)
  • Avoid conventional products and buy organic products instead. Protect the remaining rainforests and their biological diversity and thus protect your quality of life in the long run.
  • Avoid products of the large concerns that produce conventional products with palm oil: http://www.rspo.org/members/page/?
  • Supported demonstrations and petitions on this subject
  • Sign recent petition against rainforest deforestation for palm oil
